What are UTM parameters?
UTM parameters are short tags you add to a URL so Google Analytics (and most other analytics tools) can tell exactly where a visitor came from. Without them, a click from your newsletter and a click from a Facebook ad can look identical in your reports.
| Parameter | What it records | Example |
|---|---|---|
| utm_source | Traffic source | google, newsletter |
| utm_medium | Marketing channel | cpc, email, social |
| utm_campaign | Campaign name | spring-sale-2026 |
| utm_term | Paid keyword | running-shoes |
| utm_content | Link variant | banner-top |
Best practice: use lowercase letters with dashes instead of spaces (for example spring-sale-2026 instead of Spring Sale 2026). Mixed case and spaces create duplicate campaign rows in your analytics reports. This builder warns you whenever a value breaks that convention.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need all five UTM parameters?
No. utm_source, utm_medium, and utm_campaign are the three that matter; Google Analytics uses them to populate its acquisition reports. utm_term is only useful for paid search, and utm_content is handy when you run A/B tests on link placement inside one campaign.
Why does the builder warn about uppercase letters and spaces?
Analytics tools treat "Spring-Sale" and "spring-sale" as two different campaigns, which splits your data into duplicate rows. Lowercase values with dashes keep every report clean and easy to read.
Where are my presets stored?
In your browser's localStorage, only on this device. Nothing is sent to a server. Clear your browser data and the presets are gone, so use the share link to back up or move a preset to another device.
How does preset sharing work?
Clicking "Share via link" encodes the current preset into the page URL's hash fragment (the part after #). Send that link to a teammate; opening it loads the preset into their builder automatically. No backend, no database, nothing leaves the URL.
Will UTM parameters slow down my page or hurt SEO?
No. They are ignored for page content and search engines generally canonicalize or ignore them. Keep one canonical URL without parameters for SEO and use the tagged version only in the campaign links you share.
